Ideas for Adding More Storage Space While Decorating
a Small Bathroom
Bathroom storage is a
necessity, but not all bathrooms provide adequate storage space.
Some do not even provide storage space beneath the sink, but it is
possible to add more storage space while decorating a small
bathroom. With a few inexpensive additions, storage space can be
added beneath the sink, and vertical spaces can be used to store
bathroom necessities. Just because the room is small does not mean
it is inadequate. It really is very easy to add more storage space
to a small bathroom, and the storage space you add will make the
room more stylish than ever.
Under the Sink Storage Options
A bathroom sink without a cabinet can still be used for storage if
it is wrapped with a color-coordinating fabric skirt. Purchase a
ready-made sink skirt, or make one using fabric of your choice. Hem
the edges to prevent unraveling, and attach the skirt to the sink
using self-fastening adhesive strips. Place a small wooden shelf
unit beneath the sink or a plastic unit with drawers. With the
addition of a sink skirt you will add a great deal of storage space
to your small bathroom, and as a result it will look more decorative
and stylish.
Handy Wall Shelves
Wall shelves are ideal for a small room, and they are perfect for
storing and displaying more than just bathroom trinkets. Install
attractive wood shelving that matches the colors and décor, and buy
decorative baskets to fit the shelves. When placed up high, the
contents of the baskets will not be visible to guests. Baskets on a
higher level but still within easy reach are great for storing
makeup, soap, and all types of supplies for personal hygiene. Lower
baskets are perfect for storing rolled washcloths that match the
room colors, and they look decorative when placed in baskets on
shelving.
Over the Door Storage Options
Wall space over the bathroom door is often forgotten, but it is a
great place to add extra storage space, especially in a small
bathroom. Install sturdy and decorative shelving above the door, and
consider using it to store extra towels that match the colors of the
room. The towels will add more color and interest to the small
bathroom, and they will be out of the way overhead. Keep a small
footstool near the sink, and reaching the towels will never be a
problem.
Tiered Hanging Basketry
Most people consider a tiered metal basket an item for the kitchen
since they are typically used to store fresh fruits and vegetables,
but tiered metal baskets are also ideal for adding storage space to
a small bathroom. Decorate a tiered metal basket by threading narrow
satin ribbon in and out of the holes around the edges, and hang it
in an out-of-the-way corner. Fill it with rolled hand towels or
other bathroom supplies, and if you do not want the contents of the
baskets to be visible, line them with circles of fleece or other
fabric that match the bathroom colors.
You will be amazed by how much space you can find when considering
all of the space your small bathroom has to offer. Many people
forget about vertical spaces, and adding shelving and baskets in
places you would not usually consider is a great way to decorate a
small bathroom while adding more storage space. You might even be
able to eliminate the need for a linen closet, and an extra closet
can be used as storage for other household items.
